5 Surprising Things That Make You Leaner

Do you want to lose stomach fat and be lean?

If so here are 5 tips that will help you reach your goals.

  1. Ditch The Starch: Starches, such as rice, potatoes, some veggies, oats, etc. are often considered "health foods." While they can be healthy, they can also pack on stomach bodyfat like crazy if you overdo them.
  1. No More Pop: A recent study revealed that people who drank diet-sodas actually increased bodyfat when compared to those who drank sugar-sodas. DRINK WATER!
  2. Stay Hungry: It takes a special person to be hungry... and an even greater one to stay that way. I want you to stay hungry in two ways: In how you workout and literally... stay a bit hungry before you go to bed. Not "starving"... just a bit hungry. For your workouts, here is a great solution. forced progression -- is the best way to stay hungry. 7 Minute Body forces you to progress without thinking about it. Progression is built into the System. As far as staying hungry at night? Check with your doctor and if he/she okays it take 500mg of potassium and 1000mg of magnesium/calcium a few hours prior to bed. This helps with the hunger pangs. Also, keep hard-boiled eggs in the fridge. If you get really hungry, eat one with half the yolk (toss the other half.) It keeps you full for an hour at least.

  3. Cardio: Hours and hours of cardio a day is not the answer. However, you can do "light" cardio, brisk walking, or riding the bike at 60% of your max just to burn off calories. That's okay... and personally I don't find it that boring if I'm watching a TV show. It does not interfere with my main fatloss exercise and it burns off about 400 calories an hour. What does work is early morning fasting cardio... but you only need 9-15 minutes.

  4. Get Raw At Night: Raw veggies with your last meal and as a snack will really help your fatburning along. Try starting with red peppers because they're sweet. You you'll eat virtually every veggie raw at night without thinking about it. Give this a shot. The fatloss is well worth it.

Body type describes more than the way someone looks, it can provide clues as to how your body will respond to food intake and your hormonal and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) characteristics.

Once know and understand your body type, they can then adjust food to maximize body composition and health related goals.

There are three general categories of body types, but very few if any fall perfectly into one of the three categories. With that said most will have general tendencies of one of the 3 groups.

Eating and exercising according to which group you fall into can make obtaning your fitness related goals that much easier.

Why BMI Could Actually Discourage Training!

Author’s note: I wrote this when the BMI index began making the news. It struck me that the BMI actually discourages training— see if you agree.

Warning! Exercise Increases Your Risk of Weight-Related Health Problems

The BMI is designed to replace the old height/weight charts created by health insurance companies. But the question remains, what is the accuracy, not to mention, the utility, of the BMI?

What is BMI

You can calculate your BMI by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. (If you'd prefer to spare yourself the mathematical trauma, just head over to The Department of Health and Human Services at (they have a BMI calculator which you can use to instantly calculate your supposed level of risk of overweight.)

An Interesting Test Case: Me

I recently did just that, and at 205 pounds and a height of 6'1", I landed a whopping BMI of 28— nearly obese by BMI standards.

According to the NIH, you'll need a BMI of 24 or less in order to qualify as having a "normal" weight. So I kept plugging in lower and lower bodyweights, finally going all the way down to 180 pounds to obtain a BMI of 24.

I wonder, what would the consequences of losing 25 pounds be for me? Of course, a fairly large portion of this weight would be muscle— If I make the assumption that I'm currently 15% bodyfat, that means I only have 30.75 pound of fat on my entire body. So, to lose 25 pounds without losing any muscle, I'd end up with less than 2% bodyfat, which is probably not enough to sustain life.

So, that means that the 25 pounds would be mostly muscle. Since a pound of muscle burns approximately 18 calories a day, my metabolic rate would be lowered by 450 calories a day.

Also, this dramatic loss of muscle would certainly profoundly reduce my strength levels. While I have more than enough strength to get through my daily activities, muscle mass and strength both gradually decline as we age.

So I always look at muscle like "money in the bank:" the more I have now,
the more I'll still have when I'm 60, 70, or 80 years of age. So the bottom line seems to be, if I choose to adhere to NIH's guidelines, my health and functional status will surely decline!


Another very important point to consider are the legions of people who will score very acceptable numbers using the BMI, but who in fact are overfat. Despite what many people think, it’s common to find people who appear to be of normal or even low bodyweight, who in fact are overfat, because they have such low levels of muscle mass.

Consider the research conducted by Dr. William Evans at Tufts University: Evans discovered that the as women age, in many cases their leg girth tended to remain constant, however, upon CAT scan analysis, it was found that the fat mass was increased, while the lean mass had decreased. In other words, their external appearance had not significantly changed, yet their bodyfat percentage had increased.

And Even Further...

Because muscle weighs more than fat, embarking on a rapid, unhealthy weight-loss scheme will reduce your BMI much more effectively than losing weight in a healthy and rational manner (the faster you lose weight, the more muscle you lose). So I would like to venture the proposition that the new BMI will encourage fad weight loss programs and starvation diets.

Is There a Better Alternative?

Yes. Have a reputable fitness professional measure your bodyfat percentage (call the International Sports Sciences Association at (800) 892-ISSA to find such a professional in your area). Over the past several years, there have been important new developments in bodyfat measurement techniques, and today, there are several options available. Various methods have varying degrees of accuracy, but if you always use the same method, you’ll have an accurate standard of reference.

In other words, you may not know your exact percentage of bodyfat, but you’ll know if your percentage is increasing or decreasing.

I don’t know why this is such a hard pill to swallow— it’s bodyfat, NOT bodyweight that determines your health and functional capacity. There will never be a height/weight chart, regardless of what anyone chooses to call it, which can predict optimal bodyweight, because such charts never take a person’s muscle mass into account.

The 6 Steps to Fat Loss Success for Beginners

Lose weight with these 6 steps to fat loss

For beginners, getting into fitness can be intimidating and confusing. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, getting fit is one of the most straightforward tasks you’ll attempt in the New Year. Fortunately, reaching your fitness goals requires only two things; discipline, that’s up to you, and a set of simple guidelines, which I’m happy to provide.

First, you should arrange for a full physical examination from your physician. This is mandatory for people that have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or are obese. Once you have your doctor’s approval to begin a fitness program, you should schedule a fitness assessment with a health professional at your gym.

While both of these are incredibly annoying, they are essential to your success and well-being. The benefits of a doctor’s visit are obvious, particularly if you have one or more of the previously mentioned conditions but it also allows you and your doctor to discuss your lifestyle. Preventative medicine is far better than reactive medicine. Make your doctor part of your fat loss and health-building team along with the health professionals at your gym.

The real benefits of the fitness assessment aren’t finding out how much body fat you have or how many minutes you can last on the treadmill, but rather getting a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. If you want to avoid injury and actually achieve your goals this year, get to know your strengths and weaknesses.

The next secret is to walk, don’t run, to fitness success. If you want to pick up your University running workouts where you left them 10 years ago, that’s fine. But I guarantee you won’t last 10 days. And then it’ll be a dreary 355 days until you’re ready to try exercise again.

The hidden benefit of a good fitness assessment is that it will actually serve as a nice introductory workout to your return to fitness. It will buffer your delusions of fitness grandeur from the reality of what your body actually can do. After the fitness assessment teaches your body a lesson and awakens your muscles from their winter slumber, only then will you realize your limits that you must respect in subsequent workouts.

Goal-setting is the fourth secret to success (and not just in fitness, but in any area of life). It is much more effective to commit to a set of specific short-term and long-term goals than it is to routinely hope for weight loss each year.

Set realistic goals and remember to train within your limits. If you are currently sedentary and haven’t exercised in months (or years), don’t begin an advanced training program. Start with a conservative beginner program. Your belly wasn’t built in a day, and neither will be lost overnight.

Limit your initial workouts to 1 set per muscle group. In week 2, you should be ready to add another set. And if you want to build up to 3 sets, then do so in week 3. Slowly increase the weight and stay within your desired repetition range. At no time should you be too sore to function. And runners should also heed this advice. Too much running will guarantee shin splints in the early going. Avoid running on back to back days for the first two weeks and keep the distance short. Sore muscles are guaranteed when you lift. So keep the volume low.

And now for 2 super secrets that will help keep you committed and consistent with your workouts and will finally help you lose fat for good.

First, build your social support team.
Social support is the #1 factor for success for women in fitness programs, and is important for men as well. Support can come from your spouse, brother or sister, child, mom or dad, friend, neighbor, co-worker, personal trainer, or lifestyle coach. Don’t try to go it alone. People respond better when they report to a person instead of a machine.

You also need to know that nutrition is the second most important factor for success in fat loss programs. That’s why you don’t need to train like a world-class athlete when you are starting to lose fat. Most of the fat you’ll lose in the early going is because you have chosen to make better nutritional choices. And if you don’t make better nutritional choices, even the best exercise program in the world isn’t going to help you achieve your fat loss goals.

Nutrition is a lot simpler than you think. Don't over think things. See a nutritionist or listen to what your mother told you as a kid. Food choices should contain a large nutrient-to-calorie ratio. Dr. Phil (yes that Dr. Phil) calls this “High-Response Cost, High-Yield Nutrition”. And follow this rule: Don't eat foods with added sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, but make sure to log your nutritional intake. How to Lose Weight

There are many different ways to lose weight – some ways are very good and some days are very bad. In this article we will look at four wrong ways to go about losing weight and then six effective fat loss strategies that you can use to increase not only your fat loss but the rate in which you lose weight.

First, let’s look at the wrong ways to go about losing weight:

* Focus on Creating an Energy Deficit by Reducing Calories - You need to create an energy deficit but reducing calories leads to the slowing of metabolism. It is important to focus on increasing energy expenditure AND reducing calories (slightly).
* Removal of Dietary Fat - Despite all the advances in science many people still believe that absolute reduction of dietary fat is the key to losing body fat. This is not the case.
* Relying on Weight Loss “Gimmicks” - Eating Cabbage or Grapefruit at every meal to lose body fat isn’t smart. These “diets” rely on absolute caloric restriction to elicit temporary fat loss not some special characteristic of the “gimmick food”.
* Believing Some Chinese Tea Will Make You Thin - These webpages are ALL OVER THE PLACE. People don’t make 1,000s of webpages selling a product unless people are buying the product. There is no magic tea from China that will help you lose weight. Green Tea can help (but you need to drink A LOT). Ignore the celebrity “endorsements” skip the magic tea.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s look at six strategies that you can use to start losing weight right now. No fluff. This is what you need to do.

* Limit your intake of rice, sugary drinks, potatoes, bread, etc to directly after your workout. This takes advantage of a biochemical window in which your body is put in a state to better process these types of foods instead of having them lay the foundation for another layer of body fat.
* Increase your intake of green leafy vegetables (preferably to every meal). Green leafy vegetables have a ‘volume advantage’ meaning that you get to eat lots of them without eating a lot of calories. This is a huge benefit when dieting as it will help curb your hunger.
* Eat 5-6 times each and every day. Eating more often is a required habit if you want to lose a lot of weight. It will allow for better control over blood sugar levels, a constant flow of nutrients to your body throughout the day, and it will help curb hunger cravings because you will constantly be eating.
* Eat more protein (every meal). Protein is your ace in the hole. It takes more energy to digest than other nutrients, supports the maintenance and protection of your lean body mass, and is a good replacement for carbohydrates as it is not a large stimulator of insulin which you need to control when dieting.
* Participate in metabolically demanding strength training and interval training 3-5 times a week. Metabolic resistance training, categorized by short rest periods and sets of 8-12 reps will help you melt off the fat. Don’t be afraid to lift heavy weights just because you are dieting.

Rinse and Repeat (okay don’t ‘rinse’ but repeat these steps everyday and watch your pants fall off your waist).
